Follow our simple guide to hang your valances.
How to measure for a window valance.
Measure around your curtain rod from the wall around the rod to the other wall.
If you do not have a curtain rod installed measure the width of your existing curtains and add 5 inches.
Measure the width of the window then add the return measurement of valance s projection measurement if applicable to your chosen design.
For treatments and valances mounted inside the window frame measure from side to side inside the window frame.
Our example window is 40 inches wide including the window frame.
Measure down from your proposed rod or mounting board location to the spot where you want your valance hem to fall.
That means that the valance should cover a total width of about 42 to 44 inches once gathered.
To ensure the window treatment does not extend out into the room measure the depth.
Measure the width of the window opening from the inside left of the frame to the inside right.
Let s look at an example and apply this calculation.
If you are not using curtains measure the width of the window and add 3 inches.
For unlined valances or valances made with light weight fabrics you ll need to go up to 3 to 3 1 2 times fullness.
To ensure your window valance is hung correctly include the rod pocket in the length.
If you ve installed a rod measure from its face to the wall.
Using a 2 to 2 1 2 times fullness calculation that means that the valance when laid flat needs to be between 84 and 106 inches wide.
