How To Install Gutters Using Chalk Line

Hidden fasteners are placed every 24 inches along the gutter run. Hook one side of the chalk line to the nail at the start of the gutter run. Use a square and pencil to mark the gutter length and cut to the line. Apply gutter sealant to the end cap.

When the old gutters are removed you need to mark the slope for the new gutters. Begin by installing a slip joint splice on each end of an inside corner fitting. Apply gutter sealant to an end cap then press the cap onto one end of the gutter. Continue this process with gutter sections.

Determine the length of the gutter by measuring the fascia. Use needlenosed pliers to slightly crimp the elbow to fit into the downspout as shown. Locate the endpoints and hold a nail over each. Secure the downspout outlet to the gutter with four pop rivets or screws.

Measure the end point of the gutter with downward slope. Press the cap onto one end of the gutter. Using a ladder snap a chalk line between the corners where you marked the old gutter locations. Mark a line with chalk on the fascia every 10 feet 3 0 m and moving down 1 2 inch 1 3 cm for every point.

When installing gutters set the proper slope by driving a nail 1 2 in. Below the shingles on the high side of the gutter run. You will need to mark and cut the holes to install the downspout. Snap a chalk line between the start and end of the gutter run.

For every 10 feet of gutter from this measurement and mark this distance at the low end of the gutter run. Place a chalk line across the fascia to create an appropriate angle toward the downspout end. Screw a downspout elbow to the outlet tube protruding down from the gutter. Drag the string to the end point and hook it over the nail.

Get the chalk line to determine and mark the highest point of the gutter run. Firmly hit the top of the nails with a hammer to drive them into each point. Then trim the first section of the gutter to length with tin snips. Measure and record the distance from the bottom of the fascia board to this nail.

Measure the fascia to determine the length of the gutter. Using the chalk line to keep the gutters flush with the slope line attach the downspout outlet to the fascia with the power drill. Slip h idden fasteners into the gutter run and screw the gutter into the fascia with a drill and screws. You only need a slight slope to drain water.

Cut the hole for the downspout using a hole saw. There should be an outlet at the bottom of the gutter to where the hole should be marked. Repeat this process around the perimeter of the roof until all the gutter locations are adequately marked. Install gutters 1 1 1 2 the end point so that they can drain water from overhanging shingles.
